Swamp Thing #1 features the first appearance of the Swamp Thing as the former Alec Holland, as drawn by the legendary Bernie Wrightson shortly after he introduced the character (as the former Alex Olsen) in House of Secrets #92. From here, the creature would go on to mystical adventures and achieve an almost godlike status — but it starts with Holland transforming into the bog beast after his isolated cabin laboratory is sabotaged in an explosion. (He's working on an experimental bio-reformative formula that fuses with his wounded body and brings in the surrounding elements.)
The comic's early issues showcase the intricate and foreboding artwork of Wrightson which brought a loyal readership to his forlorn hero, as well as placing Wrightson into the top tier of comic artists of the era. Swamp Thing would become one of DC's most popular titles in the 1980s, as comics legend Alan Moore embraced the title's horrific roots while transforming Swamp Thing into an interstellar being. That was shortly after Swamp Thing's kinda campy big-screen debut. Since then, Swamp Thing has headlined several comic book series, gotten a big-screen sequel, and had his own TV series. Fans still eagerly await for those Alan Moore-era stories to be properly adapted, with this character's early years remaining a smart investment.
