Joe Shuster train cover/art (Winter 1940)
Nicolas Cage Collection
Superman#3 features one of the most iconic train covers in the history of comics, hot on the heels of Action #13 as Joe Shuster's top images of the Man of Steel amidst the railroad tracks. Superman is caught here in mid-leap while carrying a stunned child whose awed look says it all about the Superman mythos. This classic cover also ties into the lead story of "The Orphanage Adventure," which is an assemblage of Superman daily newspaper strips. This classic story features Lois Lane joining fellow Daily Star reporter Clark Kent in going after a crooked orphanage superintendent. (The wild story ends with an orphanage set on fire.) "Superman and the Smugglers" is another reprint of a classic daily strip featuring the early competition between Lois and Clark. There's also an infamous "faster than a speeding bullet" scene that had newspaper editors complaining to DC that Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster were really pushing their luck with what audiences were willing to believe. "Superman and the Dam" and "Superman's Phony Manager" (aka "The Man Who Sold Superman") are reprints from, respectively, Action #5 and Action #6.

A remarkably bright and well-preserved copy, this Superman #3 hails from the Nicolas Cage collection, and is one of the second-highest graded examples with only three others above it on the census. The colors remain vivid all these years later, the yellow wash is particularly bright. Save for some mild shadowing around the perimeter, this cover has retained its structural integrity and is certain to be a big draw at auction.
Overstreet Guide 2019 VF+ (8.5) value = $17,980.
