Reintroducing the Scarecrow into the Batman Mythos was a stroke of genius, as the staff at DC began to retool the Dark Knight for a more mature and savvy audience, darkening the tone of the series from the cartoonish look of the title that it presented for many years, as well as a reaction to the campy Batman TV series. Scarecrow was the perfect antagonist to drag the Caped Crusader into nightmarish territory. This issue is an important key in the series and was the departure point for one of Batman's most captivating and terrifying nemeses.
