H.G. Peter cvr/art; 3rd ever app. Wonder Woman (2nd cover); 1st app. Etta Candy & Doctor Poison (2/42)
DC Premiere Collection
Sensation Comics #2 marks the first appearance of Etta Candy, after picking up right where the debut issue left off — as Diana and Steve Trevor face off against Nazi agent Doctor Poison. The mad doctor has created a “Reverso” formula that causes the soldiers of the allied forces to do the opposite of what they are told, sowing chaos and dissent amongst the ranks. After Diana escapes Poison’s clutches, she enlists future sidekick Etta in her efforts to free Trevor.
In the ensuing action, Wonder Woman leads a marching band into the Nazi lair to distract the soldiers. During the struggle, Wonder Woman and Etta Candy unmask Doctor Poison who turns out to be Princess Maru, a Japanese Nazi. Showcasing the iconic art of H.G. Peter, this second issue of
Sensation is a real blast. The additional anthology stories all feature the second appearances of Golden Age creations including the Gay Ghost, Wildcat, and Black Pirate.
The off-kilter design of this cover can cause vertigo for some as the angles are quite disorienting, as Wonder Woman battles a pair of thugs high atop the city streets while balancing on a beam hanging from a chain. The powdery blue hues of the background fade up into a darker cobalt which is quite prominent and helps the details stand out dramatically. H.G. Peter’s muscular yet graceful art was the perfect match for Wonder Woman, endowing the superheroine with beauty and power alike. This book is incredibly scarce, as are many early Wonder Woman comics, one of only 30 original condition copies on the census, this promises to be a sleeper hit at auction.
