classic Fred Ray Joker cover; Penguin appearance; first "death" of Robin (barely resuscitated by Batman)
Batman #11 sports yet another classic cover from beloved Batman artist Fred Ray, with a legendary story inside to back up the hard-hitting action. Actually, things look kind of playful as King Batman socks the Joker right out of his own themed card. There's a more serious beating in store for the Joker in "The Joker's Advertising Campaign," though. This classic story begins frivolously enough with the Clown Prince of Crime basing his heists around clues found in newspaper ads. Then we get the first actual death of Robin, when the Boy Wonder pursues the Joker and ends up locked in a room full of burning sulfur. Batman and the Gotham City PD actually arrive too late to save Robin, with the cops assuring Batman, "This boy's dead!"
Fortunately, Batman insists on getting a pulmotor to pump oxygen into Robin's lungs, managing to revive his clinically-dead sidekick. The Batman may be past his brutal pulp roots, but he still finds the Joker and declares. "Try to kill Robin, will you? I'm going to give you the beating of your life!" And he does! Then things get even more brutal with "Four Birds of a Feather," as the Penguin puts together a crime gang with his old pals Lovely Canary, Joe Crow and Benny Buzzard (all in their only appearance). Before this story is over, Batman is shot in the gut and Robin has to take down the entire gang by himself!
