Simon & Kirby cover/artJack Kirby enjoyed an ongoing DC collaboration with the Newsboy Legion, featuring a group of orphaned street urchins who fought crime based around their urban surroundings. In the classic Star Spangled Comics #17, the brawling boys do battle with a rival gang of toughs from the wrong side of the tracks. The cover illustration is pure Kirby goodness of the sort that helped win the artist legions of fans, while also shaping the overall look and approach of comic book art for decades to come. Early issues of Star Spangled Comics are very hard to find and rarely appear at auction, making these books high-level targets for investment buyers and Golden Age collectors alike.
