This is the scarce February 1924 issue of Weird Tales, featuring the famous horror story "The Hound" by H.P. Lovecraft. This story includes the first mention of The Necronomicon, an infamous fictitious evil book of the dead. This terrifying story centers on grave robbers going mad, hearing the distant cries of a hound following them after stumbling upon the Necronomicon one night.
The Necronomicon would go on to feature in many other Lovecraft stories, but also works by other great Weird Tales writers like August Derleth and Seabury Quinn. The Necronomicon looms large in popular culture, being the centerpiece of many modern horror stories, including the Evil Dead film franchise. Many modern audiences likely do not even realize the Necronomicon is fictitious, let alone where it came from.
Lovecraft's influence and the influence of the Necronomicon only increases as time goes on. This story would go on to be part of Lovecraft's Cthulhu mythos, even though it had not been created yet when the story was first published. This is undoubtedly one of the most influential horror stories of all time, as well as horror pulps.
This fine copy of the February 1924 issue of Weird Tales features such a crisp cover. The mix of black, white, and red all appear sharply. The central shadowy figure looms large over a mountainside and will loom large in any reader's consciousness on such a clean copy. There are slight ticks along the spine and outer edges of the pulp, but they do not deter from the haunting image. The ticks along the outer spine almost appear as extensions of the lightning popping diagonally along the cover. This is a beautiful pulp, ideal for any Weird Tales collector, Lovecraft fan, or horror fan.
