1st appearance of Dr. Doom, w/ origin, bondage cover; Jack Kirby cover/art; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 9 (CBI)
Fantastic Four #5 features the first appearance of
Doctor Doom, instantly creating a top Silver Age collectible as the
Fantastic Four ushered in one of Marvel's most important villains. Of course, the deathly countenance of the Latverian ruler had roots in the Golden Age. Jack Kirby's design (and Stan Lee's complex characterization) still made Victor von Doom one of the most influential pop-culture figures of the past 60 years.
Dr. Doom was soon a major Marvel presence outside of
Fantastic Four, with Latveria becoming a hot destination for every hero from Thor to Luke Cage. Doom would even dominate the first
Secret Wars saga on a planet populated by all of Marvel's favorites. (Mark Hamill confirmed the character's massive impact, recalling that his reaction to Darth Vader when first reading the
Star Wars script was, “It’s Dr. Doom!”) A 2024
Doom one-shot comic quickly sold out in the shops. Fans also anxiously awaited Doom's debut within the official Marvel Cinematic Universe. That became one of the biggest showbiz stories of 2024 when Robert Downey Jr. took on the role for the upcoming
Avengers: Doomsday and
Avengers: Secret Wars.

"Meet... Doctor Doom!" proclaims the cover of issue #5 of "The World's Greatest Comic Magazine.” This classic Stan Lee and Jack Kirby issue introduced Marvel’s greatest supervillain of all time, Doctor Doom, as well as advertising the upcoming Incredible Hulk #1 and publishing a letter from future Marvel Editor-in-Chief, Roy Thomas. The FF had formidable foes before Doom, the Mole Man, the Skrulls, and Namor the Sub-Mariner, but Doctor Doom turned the team into a supernova. He was a sensational hit, and would immediately return in Fantastic Four #6, teaming up with Namor. Shortly after, he would cross over into Amazing Spider-Man #5, proving the strength of his villainy and staying power. He would go on to become the primary archvillain of the Marvel Universe for decades and was immediately iconic.
