origin & 1st app of the Incredible Hulk; Kirby cover & art; 1st app of Betty Ross, Rick Jones, and General "Thunderbolt" Ross; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 10 (CBI)
Incredible Hulk #1 really is the first appearance of
the Hulk, as Stan Lee and
Jack Kirby made new strides into the Marvel Age — creating becoming yet another Silver Age key and top collectible. In addition to introducing readers to Dr. Bruce Banner and his brutal alter-ego, this timeless classic marks the first appearances of Betty Ross, Rick Jones, and General "Thunderbolt" Ross. (General Ross, of course, becomes a major part of the MCU with Harrison Ford's big-screen turn in the upcoming
Captain America: Brave New World .)
The iconic cover image continues to resonate with fans to this day. Stan Lee, however, wasn't happy. He demanded a change after seeing the botched coloring process for the Hulk's debut. The second issue would change the Hulk from a blotchy gray to his green-skinned glory. Hulk would then survive his own title’s quick cancellation to keep thrilling comics fans, eventually coming back with a top-selling book and a hit '70s television show. From there, the Hulk’s return to the big-screen Avengers reignited the public’s passion for both the unlikely hero and his alter-ego of Dr. Banner.
