1st appearance of Robin (Dick Grayson), w/ origin; Bob Kane/Jerry Robinson cover/art; Comic Book Impact rating of 9 (CBI)

Detective Comics #38 changed the course of comics (and Batman) with the first appearance of Robin, the Boy Wonder. Created in 1940 by Bob Kane, Bill Finger, and Jerry Robinson, Robin made his debut with a tragic backstory that made him the perfect companion for the similarly orphaned Bruce Wayne. The idea of a kid sidekick was still a major gamble against the gritty backdrop of Gotham City. Fortunately, Robin was embraced by younger readers. The character soon doubled the sales of comics in the Batman franchise, inspiring a wave of young sidekicks from beloved stars (Bucky Barnes, Toro) to forgotten figures (Stampy, Owl-Girl).

Detective #38 was ultimately proven right to hype Robin on the cover as the “sensational character find of 1940!" Of course, many teen characters would later take on Robin's trademark yellow cape, red suit, green boots, and gloves. Investors still know there's only one original Boy Wonder, and only one definitive debut as Robin bursts onto the cover and into legend!
Detective Comics #38 was a game-changer that introduced Robin, the Boy Wonder, which helped cement Batman's never-ending popularity. This copy earned a 5.5 CGC Universal Grade and has cream to off-white pages. The book has amazing eye appeal, with sharp colors that highlight the historic image of Batman and Robin teaming up for the first time. Early Detective issues are some of the hardest comics to find and are always hotly contested items in our auctions. Less than 100 original condition copies are recorded on the CGC Census, making this book very desirable in any grade. This is a historic key, and a major stepping stone in creating the Batman universe we all know and love today. With the Dynamic Duo appearing together in countless comics, movies, cartoons, TV shows, video games, and every other medium you can think of, Robin's first appearance is an important key to own!

Overstreet Guide 2021 FN- (5.5) value = $38,500
