origin & 1st appearance Namora; 1st Namora/Sub-Mariner team-upThe main claim to fame for Marvel Mystery Comics #82 is the first appearance of Aquaria Nautica Neptunia aka Namora, another ruler of an undersea civilization, much like Namor’s home of Atlantis, this royal princess joins in the fight against crime after her kingdom is laid waste by the nefarious Stoop Richards. Stoop is a high-stakes thief, and will stop at nothing to accrue wealth, he murders Namora’s entire community, but the Sub-Mariner finds her alive after the massacre and they join forces to bring down the grotesque gangster. Ken Bald’s artistic contributions to this tale honor the lush aquatic tradition that Namor’s adventures were known for in the Golden Age. The Human Torch story that kicks off the issue addresses the topic of what has come to be known as PTSD, and the role the disorder plays in alcoholism in veterans of WWII, although this topic turn out to be a smokescreen for an evil plot, it is nonetheless, an interesting avenue of discussion for a comic of the time period. Adorned by a majestic Bob Powell cover design, this issue is an interesting entry from the post-war period, which was likely introducing a female counterpart to Subbie in an attempt to move copies as hero books were on the wane in the aftermath of the international conflict. From the #1 CGC Registry Set
