classic Ditko monster cover; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 7 (CBI)
Steve Ditko created a lot of iconic superhero covers, but here's an early sci-fi work that's enchanted his fans for decades. This cover to Space Adventures #12 would be showcased in 1982 for the cover of Michael Wileman's A 50's Ditko Cover Gallery, and then return in 2005 to sell the hardcover copy of Vanguard's Steve Ditko - Space Wars.
At this point, Ditko hadn't even marked his first year as an illustrator. It had been barely six months since Ditko even became a cover artist with The Thing! #12. The rising star was obviously still comfortable paying tribute to masters such as Wallace Wood and Al Williamson.
Sadly, there's no story accompanying Ditko's compelling work — although little could have improved on the artist's impactful punchline. The contents are still beloved, as well, with artistic contributions from Joe Shuster, John Belfi, Seymour Moskowitz and Dick Giordano.
