1st appearance of Hawkeye (w/ origin); 3rd app. of Black Widow; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 8 (CBI)
Tales of Suspense #57 features the first appearance of Hawkeye, the third appearance of the Black Widow, and a great story that establishes Tony Stark as a romantic hero whose Iron Man armor only slows the shrapnel inching towards his broken heart. Clint Barton is introduced into the Marvel Age as a bitter carnival performer inspired to build an arsenal of arrows after watching Iron Man in action. Hawkeye's brief heroics, however, take a villainous turn after falling under the influence of the Black Widow, making her third appearance on her own way to becoming a proper crimefighter. Of course, all three of these characters would become pop-culture icons as part of the Avengers in both Marvel Comics and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Today, Tales of Suspense #57 is highly regarded as a vital key issue that began spinning many of Marvel's most compelling Silver Age storylines. Hawkeye, meanwhile, remains a beloved MCU figure, with fans eagerly hoping for his return as part of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
