1st app Forever People, 1st full app Darkseid; Superman app; Jack Kirby/Colletta cover/art; COMIC BOOK IMPACT rating of 7 (CBI)When Jack Kirby moved to DC in 1970, he insisted on taking over the publisher’s lowest selling book, so nobody would lose their job to make room for the legend. That comic was Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen. Immediately after taking the reins on the title, Kirby used the languishing Boy Reporter's book to launch several new ideas that would spin off from Olsen and launch their own series. The overall concept of the Fourth World was Kirby’s attempt to create a mythology of gods that would serve as a backdrop to the mortal (or supermortal) hero world that had been established by DC for decades. In the premiere issue of Forever People, Kirby would enlist Superman to help drive interest in the new title, and the Man of Steel would encounter the hippified team of Big Bear, Mark Moonrider, Vykin the Black, and Serafin confronting Darkseid (making his first full appearance in this very issue), who is holding their companion, Beautiful Dreamer captive. In an attempt to save their teammate, the Forever People join together to transform into Infinity Man, who would team up with the Kryptonian to rescue the hostage Dreamer. The Fourth World would also include the titles Mister Miracle and New Gods in the linked saga, it should seem fairly obvious that the Forever People will play an important role in a Fourth World film series, so, obtaining a copy of this first issue should be on any serious investment collector’s to-do list.
