Highest GradedAs the comic-buying public’s tastes shifted in the post-war era, many superhero titles were slowly transformed into other genres; as Captain America eventually found himself hosting a horror book over at Timely, so did Blue Bolt end up as a footnote in his own title, the starring hero not even appearing on the cover of this issue. What is on this book’s cover, however, is an amazing horror illustration by the beloved cult artist L.B. Cole, who is certainly one of the unsung heroes of the era, whose influence and skill are finally being given the respect they deserve by the savvy collectors of Golden Age treasures of today. “The Beast From Below” cover is a minor-league classic of the halcyon days of the pre-code horror comic that displays Cole’s “poster color” style in all of its glory.
Blue Bolt #112 is an exceedingly rare comic, with only 66 copies listed on the census, this 9.0 copy is indeed one of the four highest-graded examples known, making this a candidate for a huge sleeper slugfest come auction time. The book is extremely well-preserved; the binding is tight, the spine is rigid, and the colors are as bright as the day they were printed. Collectors of Golden Age horror comics will undoubtedly be waiting to do battle over ownership of this incredible L.B. Cole cover.
