ow/white pages Jack Kirby/Steve Ditko cover; 1st app of Groot
Tales to Astonish #13 has become a classic comic for boasting the first appearance of Groot in the memorably titled "I Challenged...Groot! The Monster from Planet X!" It was still a big surprise to collectors when Groot (and the value of this book) took off as one of Marvel's most beloved heroes. The character had been reimagined in 2006 as a noble figure in the comics, but the former villain became a proper pop-culture star when Groot was recruited for 2014's big-screen Guardians of the Galaxy alongside Star-Lord, Rocket Raccoon, Gamora, and Drax the Destroyer. From there, Groot would find himself branching out to plenty of other hot projects. That included his revived version of Baby Groot being showcased in the "I Am Groot" series of shorts on Disney+. Today, fans are fervently hoping for Groot's return alongside his pal Rocket Racoon in more upcoming MCU projects.

Growing in popularity since the release of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, Tales to Astonish #13 is a comic that was previously thought of as one in a run of absurd monster covers conceived by Kirby and Lee before the superhero resurgence of the Silver Age. This book is well preserved, the colors are still crisp, and the gray tones in Groot's body play off the gradations of light in the background. Despite some mild wear around the edges, this is an impressive 8.0 copy with massive eye appeal.
